Personalization and segmentation are very important keys to your email marketing success and are not widely used. Your subscribers inboxes are receiving an increasing amount of emails and you must compete. Emails that include; personalized subject lines, salutations, offers, follow-ups, etc will stand out from the pack. Start off by personalizing the message with their “First name”, then you can move on to sending different emails to different segments of your list.
Each step can take your email marketing success further.

As email marketers, we spend a considerable amount of time building relationships with ISPs and maximizing our email campaigns to get our emails placed in our customers/clients Inbox. Unfortunately, this work is often derailed because the final destination, the e-mail client (Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.), have filters that can filter your email into the junk folder or not deliver it at all. To get to the Inbox, it’s important to have your email address or sender domain added to their safe list.

Stay tuned for step 3 next week.

83% choose email marketing as the most important advertising media they planned to use in 2007. - Datran Media (2007)

With the ongoing increasing popularity of email marketing, there is no shortage of email marketing software and web-based services and solutions out there to choose from. So how do you choose between an email marketing software and email marketing service? Mailworkz offers both.

Email Marketing Software. This is a great option if you have a limited budget as they are usually a one time fee. Mailworkz offers an award winning email marketing desktop software Broadcast. Some of the many advantages of Broadcast are:

- You can send unlimited campaigns for a flat rate.
- Mail is sent through your company mail server or ISP’s, and the delivery options are yours to configure.
- Software is installed on your computer and the data is kept private and secure on your own computer.
- You manage everything.

Web-based Service. Using the services of an ESP (Email Service Provider) such as Zebratracks has even more advantages. These include:

- You don’t have to install any software or run a specific operating system. All you need is a browser connected to the Internet and you can get started from any computer at any location.
- Cost is usually a lower initial investment (depending on campaign size).
- You don’t have to involve your in house technical staff or ISP (internet service provider). Your ESP handles everything for you.
- Mail is sent through the ESP’s servers. They are responsible for email deliverability and reputation, ISP relations, etc.
- List management is automated. Unsubscribe and bounced emails are processed without filling up user’s inbox.

We all know email is probably today’s most popular way to advertise. Every day our inboxes are filled with messages from people who want our business - whether we asked for the contact or not. Email is today’s biggest communication factor; but why shouldn’t it be? It’s all but free to use, and it’s almost instantaneous.

But there is one problem with advertising via email that you may not think of very often: blacklisting. All it takes is one complaint, and your ISP or domain name can be put on someone’s black list and your IP is blacklisted. If you’re on the blacklist, your emails are not getting through - and neither is your advertising message.

So how big of a problem is this? AOL, one of the world’s biggest Internet service providers, blocks a whopping 80% of email messages to its subscribers due to blacklising. Your email could be the most legitimate message ever sent, but if one person forgets they signed up or decides to complain, you could be blacklisted. And for your business, the resulting slump in sales can be devastating.

What is a blacklist exactly? A blacklist is a database of known Internet addresses (or IPs) used by individuals or companies sending spam. Various ISPs and bandwidth providers subscribe to these blacklist databases to filter out spam sent across their network or to their subscribers. Companies like AOL, MSN, and Yahoo all have very strict policies on spam, so many well-intended, legitimate emails never get through.

So how can you be sure you haven’t been blacklisted? Unfortunately, you really can’t be 100% sure. You may be on someone’s blacklist and not even know it, and can be added to and removed from blacklists at the drop of a hat. The only way to prevent being blacklisted unfairly is to use today’s technology to keep track of it all. There is cutting-edge software technology available that checks all the major blacklists like Spamcop, MAPS, and SPAMHaus, to ensure your domain or ISP hasn’t been added.

Taking a few moments to understand and solve your potential blacklisting problem can mean a world of difference in your bottom line.

A popular cry from nearly all of our customers. You have decided to embark on an email campaign, but you need targeted addresses to contact. What do you do?

Do not buy lists? You perhaps have seen these?

You know the ones, “Buy 10 million addresses for only $149″. Using these lists will only have you labeled as a Spammer. These addresses are suspect, in fact, over 70% are bogus or duplicated, and the rest certainly have not asked to receive “your” message. Furthermore, software or ISP’s are not made to handle the load of that many email address, much less the “in error” returns?

You could “rent” email lists from submission services, but these can be costly, usually 20 to 30 cents per email.

What do you do? Use these next 8 ideas to get the ideas flowing and build your own targeted list.

Emails of customers who want to receive your message potential customers that you can communicate with over and over.

1. Your Website – ask people to signup for your newsletter, guest book, ezine, contest. Don’t forget to put this on every page. A free tool like EzlistZ http://www.ezlistz.com can make this easy for you.

2. Direct Mail – Send out postcards to potential clients.

On these ask people to not only visit your site, but sign up to receive valuable information, products etc. Companies like Web Card can help you with this.

3. Telemarketing – Use telemarketing agents to contact your potential customers. Have them ask for email addresses. Give them a reason to do so. Perhaps a contest, coupons, free trial, information.

4. Use Brokers – Ask brokers or other sites with heavy traffic to post a signup for your information or service. Most will charge between 10 – 15 cents per email, but these are yours to keep.

5. Door-to-Door – One of our tourism customers found this quite effective - they hired students to go door to door asking for email addresses in return for information that they might be interested in.

6. Online Contest – Online contests are often a very effective way of getting email addresses. Make the email address a requirement of entry. There are a number of companies that will manage all aspects of your online contest. One is Raffle http://www.raffle.ca/

7. Bricks and Mortar – For those of you with physical stores, don’t forget to ask for email addresses at every turn. Ask at checkout, send surveys, run contests etc.

8. Your Communication Material – Don’t just put your URL on your communications. Ask people to go to your site and signup. Put this on business cards, order forms, survey forms and signature files.

There are many more techniques that will help you build your lists hopefully these will get your ideas flowing. Although building a qualified list will take time, in the end this is the best, most cost effective and profitable route to take.

Obviously, if your email is poorly structured, few will read it. If your message is effectively written, however, the results can be considerable. In fact, many direct-response offers delivered by email out-pull conventional mail by a wide margin.

Like the best sales letters, email is personal, one-to-one communications. But delivering an effective marketing message through this media can be tricky business.

Perhaps the biggest mistake writers make is relying too heavily on the lessons learned from decades of “paper” direct mail. True, certain principles still apply — such as a strong offer, powerful lead-in, and an appeal to buyer self-interest. But other writing rules, successful in print marketing, fail miserably in email. As a marketing medium email, it seems, is setting its own rules.

But what are those rules? Unfortunately, these are still evolving. What follows are one-hundred and one of the best writing tips — based on research, testing, interviews with experts, and personal experience with dozens of successful campaigns — I have discovered for creating successful email marketing messages.
